A large, golden rice-and-lentil crepe with crisp lace edges, rolled around lightly spiced potato and served with chutney. Our South Indian dosas are the dish visitors talk about most — one Tripadvisor guest called them “the best dosas I’ve had outside of India”.

About Our Masala Dosa

Masala dosa is the best known dish of South India: a naturally fermented batter of rice and urad lentils, spread paper-thin on a hot griddle until it turns crisp and golden, then folded over a soft filling of turmeric-spiced potato and onion. At Indian Curry House-Banff it is cooked to order, so every dosa reaches the table hot, crackling at the edges and steaming in the middle.

Banff has plenty of places to eat, but very few kitchens serving genuine Tamil Nadu-style South Indian cooking. Our team makes the batter the traditional way and ferments it properly — that slow fermentation is what gives a real dosa its tang, its lightness and its crisp shell. It is the reason guests who grew up in Chennai, Coimbatore or Colombo keep finding their way up to our dining room on Banff Avenue.

What Makes Our Dosas Different

Everything starts with the batter. We let it ferment until it is airy and gently sour, then griddle each dosa individually rather than holding them under a lamp. The potato masala is tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, and the dosa arrives with chutney for dipping. It is a naturally vegetarian dish, and one of the lightest ways to eat Indian food after a long day on the trails.
